If you climb steep sport routes or hard boulder problems, pick aggressive shoes with a pronounced downturn and a snug heel for heel hooks. For longer sport routes and classics in the 5.8–5.10 range, a neutral or moderately downturned shoe gives more comfort and edge control; many climbers size down 1–2 from street shoes for better precision.

Shoes built on wider lasts like PN 45 or models labeled for high-volume feet will fit more comfortably without excessive pinching. Try shoes that offer roomy toe boxes or look for models with resoling-friendly leather uppers so you can get a custom stretch while keeping a secure heel fit.

Thicker rubber around 4–5mm helps with crisp edging on small holds, while sole stiffness ranges from soft for smearing to stiff for technical edging. Brands often use different rubber compounds—Vibram XS Grip2 and Stealth C4 are common choices—so balance sensitivity with a rubber thickness that suits the routes you climb.

Approach shoes are ideal when you have a hike-to-climb approach or need scrambling traction between the car and the crag; they combine sticky rubber with trail-friendly midsoles.
