Many devices accept ropes from about 8.5mm to 11mm, though compatibility varies by model so check the spec for your device. Assisted-braking units tend to perform best with a narrower recommended range and are often optimized for single ropes.

Some tubular and multi-use devices are designed with attachment geometry for guide mode so they can clip directly to an anchor for top-rope or leader belays. Models like the Black Diamond ATC XP and Edelrid Giga specify guide-mode compatibility, so confirm that feature if you plan multipitch or rescue-style belaying.

Aluminum alloy bodies keep tubular devices light—often 50 to 100 grams—while steel parts in assisted-braking cams add durability where friction and wear are concentrated. Regular inspection of the rope channels and avoiding sharp edges will help aluminum and steel components last longer.

For sport and gym climbing many people prefer assisted-braking devices for their reduced fatigue and automatic locking features; the Petzl Grigri is a classic example. Tubular devices are ideal for multipitch trad because they handle double-rope rappels and offer lighter weight and simplicity.
