Rappel to your heart's content.
Petzl designed the Stop Ascender to make long, single-rope rappels easier and more comfortable, offering reliable on-rope control and ease of use. The self-braking function makes it convenient to stop and hold your position on the rope, simply by letting go of the handle. Once you do this, the internal cam pinches the rope and stops your descent, leaving you free to rest or check out your surroundings. When used in conjunction with an ascender and foot loop, you can also use the Stop to ascend short distances up the rope.

Really Good Descender
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I am familiar with these from past training in high angle rescue and confined space. The only downside is they do not pull through easily for ascending. I know they are designed for descending only. Also, we had one roll on a carabiner and the handle locked in. It fed rope on a rappel until the user punched the unit to free it up. It had rolled in the carabiner and gotten stuck. Be aware of how you position it and you won't have a problem. This is the first time I have run into that in quite a few years and models.
good for its intended purpose
device works well. we actually used them to drop mascots into sports arenas from the rafters. as the description states, this has a limited range of uses: long, single rope decents. it'll be of use when spelunking or canyoneering (or lowering mascots) but doesn't really have a place in your crag bag. just a word of caution, this device offers excellent control (read more friction), and makes one comfortable to lower faster. the faster speed and the greater friction can make this device HOT and it will melt your rope if you lower too fast and don't immediately pull it off when done.
bomber for caving and descent!
much easier in my opinion for descending than the grigri and many other devices. you squeeze the the handle and it allows you to control the speed of your descent (you can get cooking on this thing if you're not careful, i don't mind it though). this is THE iconic caving device, and works extremely well in descent. not my cup of tea for ascending stuff though. overall, everyone needs one if all you do is cave or abseil. i've had good experience with mine.
Here is a shot of my well used Petzl STOP!
Solid but Limited!
I liked the stop descender it has pretty kewl features it has a stop latch and can hook onto a biner or snap onto a rope with ease. functionality of this piece of equipment seems flawless and i liked the lil diagram stamped into the side plate. always good to have a quick reference! as far as flaws there where a few things a didn't like. first i couldn't draw rope through the devise in reverse even after releasing all tension. the second is a fatal flaw if used with a biner and for some reason you must make an assent other biners attached to the harness can contact the locking devise creating a potentially dangerous situation. best bet always test your rig and work out bugs at low altitudes.

What is max weight for load? what is the material of roller axis: alloy or steel? I'm questioning this to find out how good it would be on long drops such as longer than 200 feet w/out rebelays, would it overheat and cause aluminum to change characteristics and alloy axis could be a problem.

will this item work on a metal cable?
will this item work on a metal cable?
No. Not at all. Ropes only, and it's intended for climbing ropes (nylon, 9-12 mm). If you could even get a metal cable into it, which is unlikely, it would probably not slide at all, and if it did it would eat through the device really fast.
