ATC-Pilot Belay Device

Rest assured that Black Diamond's ATC-Pilot Belay Device will help you catch whipping lead climbers like any other assisted braking device. Unlike most assisted braking belay devices, the ATC-Pilot doesn't use any moving components to ensure a secure brake; instead, the device's unique geometry makes the rope pinch itself whenever the rope tugs too hard on the climber side, ensuring a naturally reliable catch every time. This is Black Diamond's first attempt at making an assisted braking device with increased security and safety, and climbers can't help but admire its compact, lightweight, sleek design that could only come for Black Diamond.

Haven’t actually used this yet but have rented the same device at the gym and it’s super easy to use with excellent control.

Extremely light

This purchase was a trial to give the new pilot a try. I like the light weight aspect to it and the assisted braking is a good tool for some friends who are still working on belaying skill.

assisted breaking for lefty's

not sure about the plastic construction, but the assisted breaking in the vertical plane is nice for right handed or left handed belayers. A little tricky with a thicker rope to feed smoothly. Works great with the 8.6-9.4mm ropes I've used it with. The 9.8-10.2mm rope it tended to get stuck more with.

slips under tension

I have tried the Pilot with 10+ different karabiners including BD's HMS and experienced slipping in all cases. I have an old worn Magnetron HMS which had the least slippage but still. So I'm a bit concerned. Please suggest a karabiner which has a proper geometry so that the device locks and doesn't slip under tension. Ropes were of different brand and diameter but always within the specified range. Mammut Crag, Beal Booster III, Gilmonte Next II, all these ropes slipped. Giving out slack is smooth, but still needs a bit of practicing.

Love this Device. Has changed belaying for me.

After I started using this device, I quickly realized I will never go back. It performs exceptionally for lead belay. The assisted breaking is efficient and very safe. I am more than comfortable climbing and belaying with this device. It is perfect for top rope and single pitch lead. I would recommend this to anyone starting to lead climb, climb outdoors or intermediate climbers in general.

Great, less clunky, auto-locking belay

Much more control lead belaying than my old auto-locker.

Works smoothly!

Light, sturdy, and doesn’t take up as much space as other devices I’ve used. Except this one also auto-locks!
