10/10 Belay Device

I'm absolutely in love with the SMART. It's wonderful for top rope and leading all in the gym setting. I love the versatility, ease of use, and overall feel of this device. It combines the simplicity of an ATC with the extra help of a Gri-Gri without all of the extra weight. The Smart and other passive breaking belay devices are also ambidextrous which means it's great for left handed belayers. I carry it around almost daily for work and still looks like new.

Lightweight and safe ABD

I use the Smart 2.0 belaying both top-rope and lead climbing. I really like how light it is, especially on a day that has a long approach hike! When paying out slack for a lead climber, it is pretty intuitive and smooth. I've recommended this to a few new climbers who were hesitating to pay the money for a gri-gri, but wanted the assurance of using an assisted braking device. The gri-gri has more use cases, but a novice climber on single pitch is unlikely to need many of them.

Really great for lead

I really enjoy lead belaying with this. It has great control and it really does stop hands free (I don't do this) which is great for additional safety. It is not as smooth as a Gri-Gri for top-rope but it is definitely good enough. I have a Gri-Gri and I still use the smart 90% of time. The 4 stars is because it is not super smooth.

Super convenient for lead climbing! Much easier to give rope out than an active assisted device.

Great device

I don't own one yet, but at the COPE director training I went to at National Camp School, our instructors had us try out one of these. It was so smooth and easy to use. I'm definitely gonna pick one up for myself.

Super simple and effective belay device

Nothin crazy about it, its super simple and feeds like an ATC but has the auto-catch. It also makes lowing super great and easy. Less diverse than an ATC in the fact I wouldn't rappel with it or use it on multi-pitch climbs but its fantastic for exactly what its made for, belaying from the ground. Much eaiser than a gri-gri and tons cheaper so it has my bet.

Great cragging belay device

I've never been a grigri user but the low weight and cost of the smart drove me to give it a try. I couldn't have been more pleased on my first day of climbing with it. It takes a few minutes to get used to, but after that it was superior to an ATC in all ways for belaying on the ground. I'll be throwing it in my bag for any climbing outing where multi pitch is not the main objective.

i think i like this more than the grigri

It's such a solid piece of equipment. It's able to feed rope better than the grigri, so I use it alot for just about all forms of rope climbing. however, a little too much use, and you'll start to develop blisters on the side of your thumb, but what's wrong with more callouses?

Easy to use

This is easy to get used to and I prefer it to my grigri for that reason.

My belay device of choice

I have a few different delay devices and this is my device of choice. No moving parts, it's self locking and easy to use. I find it very easy and fast to take and give slack when leading and always feel confident in the device. I have trained several people how to lead climb and most prefer the Smart 2.0 over other devices that I have.
