Why We Like The Outdoor Research Ferrosi DuraPrint Hooded Jacket
Outdoor Research built the Ferrosi DuraPrint Hooded Jacket for everything from backpacking to climbing. On their trusty Ferrosi fabric—known and loved for its stretch, weather resistance, and breathability—they added DuraPrint printed tech to high-wear shoulder and elbow areas. Sharp rock and rubbing backpack straps are no match for this durable design.

Microplastic Factory
While the hoodie feels nice and is appropriate for variable weather, it started pilling almost immediately at the waist and chest pockets where the fabric contacted my 35L backpack chest and hip straps (basic nylon and meshed padding, respectively). That's not a "maximum minus one" durability product, OR. I have similar 2-way stretch jackets that have stood up much better than this. The hoodie also has poor odour retention even with two 150g-200g layers of merino underneath to capture sweat. Having to wash that out after ~3 wears means the DWR coating isn't worth much unless you want to spend a lot of money and time on wash-in protection (clean cycle w/ extra rinse, treat cycle w/ extra rinse, dry cycle). That's why I tagged "Not Waterproof"; you will wash it out and the hoodie will wet out.

soft and stretchy wind protection
I've been using this for a couple months now and really like it! I've found it cuts ~75-80% of felt wind and even as a softshell shrugs occasional rain pretty well. Mine wet out after about 25 minutes in light/medium rain and when soaked wasn't transferring much water to my baselayer. Perfect when you really should've brought a Helium Rain but you didn't. While not quite breathable enough for me when running unless its real cold (I'm a warm person) it's great for everything less aerobic than that for me. The cuffs are elastic on the inside of your wrist which works well with a watch. The single hood cinch works well to keep your hood on while minimizing adjustments. Pocket linings double as vents, are big enough for a smartphone or light gloves, and are not sewn down at the top allowing you to stash your map or mail in a pinch. The Hood stow works well when you plan to use it, but I did find myself just tucking the hood inside if I was in a rush and couldn't be bothered to roll it up. The hem cinch is located on the right side and is easy to adjust one handed and has low profile hardware which is fine under a backpack belt. I'm 5'11/ 210#/ 43" chest and wear a Men's Large size tshirt and find the size large fits me perfectly with a trim fit. Key for me with fit is that in my other OR jackets like the Foray and Superstrand I've needed to size up to XL to have the hem fit over my butt. Not so with the Ferrosi- the stretchiness of the fabric and cut works perfectly for me. I normally wear an echo or vigor top underneath mine and layer any insulation over. If I wanted to put insulation under the Ferrosi I would need to size up once. The jacket is lighter, and more flattering than my other windshell from another company. Combined with the comfiness of the stretch I've found myself grabbing it when just going out running errands and it's almost always at the top of my pack heading out into the woods now.
