For flat, high-speed triathlons go with larger rings like standard 53/39t or big single rings in the 58–68t range to reach higher top-end speeds. Semi-compact 52/36t or compact 50/34t doubles are better for courses with climbs and rolling terrain because they keep your cadence manageable.

Most triathletes use crank lengths between 150–175mm, selected in 2.5–5mm increments to match rider height and leg mechanics. If you’re unsure, try a common 170mm or 172.5mm and adjust shorter or longer based on comfort and knee feel.

A 1x setup is ideal when you want a simpler, more aerodynamic front end—models like the Vision Trimax and TriRig systems show how much weight and drag you can save with direct-mount singles. These systems often use oversized rings and narrow-wide teeth for chain retention, and big single rings up to 68t are common on flat TT courses.

Torque bolts to the manufacturer spec; aluminum chainrings typically call for 8–12 Nm while carbon components are often 10–16 Nm. A calibrated torque wrench and correct fastener sequence will protect lightweight systems like the 544g TriRig setups and help avoid premature wear.

Check your crank’s BCD (110mm, 130mm, or 104mm) and intended chainline before buying chainrings, since incorrect fit harms shifting and increases drivetrain friction. Measure your crank and confirm specs against common combos—many TT setups pair 150–175mm cranks with rings like the Shimano GRX 48/31t—so verify BCD and chainline first.
