Brown Paddle

Inflatable SUPs built from multi-layer PVC with drop-stitch construction are best for travel and tough use because they pack down and resist punctures at 15–25 PSI when inflated. Solid epoxy or fiberglass boards give better glide and responsiveness but are rigid and more prone to dings, so factor in whether you need portability or maximum performance.

Match your board length to the activity and your skill: short boards under 10 feet work well for surfing and kids, medium 10–12 feet suit yoga or fishing, and long 12–14+ foot boards boost speed and tracking for touring. Also consider volume—boards in the 250–300L range support paddlers around 150–200 pounds—and nose shape, since rounded noses add stability while pointed noses improve glide.

Planing hulls with a flatter bottom handle choppy water and surf better by offering stability and lift, while displacement hulls with a V-shape track and slice through water for efficient long hauls. Hybrid hulls are a good middle ground if you want versatility across varied conditions.

A fishing or touring board should have secure storage like integrated bungees, D-rings, and rod holders, plus a high weight capacity—many models support 300–500 pounds for gear and a paddler. For example, the BOTE Traveller is built for touring with a hybrid shape and rugged gear capacity, while stable platforms make casting and camping setups easier.

Inflatables typically reach optimal rigidity between 15 and 25 PSI, thanks to drop-stitch cores that lock the board shape when properly inflated. Higher-pressure, multi-layer PVC inflatables feel more like a hard board for better glide and load capacity, and models like the BOTE Breeze use a wider 32–33 inch platform to boost stability at moderate inflation.
