Touring Paddles

Double-bladed paddles are the standard for touring because they deliver efficient, sustained strokes suited to long distances, and European-style double blades are the most common. Single-bladed options exist but are less common for touring since they usually don’t offer the same continuous efficiency for multi-day paddling.

Sizing depends on your kayak width, paddling style, and height; most touring paddles list lengths in centimeters and adjustable ranges typically span 200–260 cm. For low-angle touring you’ll want a slightly longer, lower-torque setup with the top hand below shoulder level, while narrower kayaks usually need shorter paddles.

Carbon fiber shafts provide the lowest weight and highest stiffness, which reduces swing weight and limits flex that can sap power—models like the Aqua-Bound Sting Ray Carbon showcase that lightweight performance. Fiberglass offers a durable, moderately light middle ground, and laminated hardwood with epoxy tips is a common entry-level choice that balances feel and cost.

Adjustable paddles are ideal if you plan to share gear or switch between kayaks because designs like Werner Paddles offer ranges across 200–260 cm for quick customization. A fixed-length paddle can be better if you want a finely tuned setup and often pairs with carbon construction for the lightest, stiffest feel.

Sea touring paddles are built to perform across varying conditions and longer expeditions, emphasizing steady, rhythmic power rather than sprint speed, while general flat-water touring paddles are tuned for relaxed, efficient strokes. Blade areas for touring sit between racing and whitewater sizes, and entry-level options like the Bending Branches Whisper are great for recreational flat-water trips.
