Whitewater Paddles

Start by matching paddle length to your height, boat type, and preferred stroke—whitewater paddles are typically shorter, around 188–197 cm, to improve boat control in rapids. Adjustable shafts that come in 2 cm increments from about 185–210 cm make it easy to fine-tune fit.

River runner paddles prioritize power and bracing for downstream runs and big water, while playboat paddles are shaped for surfing waves and freestyle moves; creeking designs have larger blades built for pushy currents and rocky impacts. Models like the Werner Sherpa sit in the middle as all-around options that balance efficiency and maneuverability.

Carbon blades and shafts keep weight low and stiffness high—carbon builds can get a paddle under 1 kg—while reinforced nylon or injection-molded carbon-nylon blades offer superior wear and rock resistance for rough rivers. Shaft diameter matters too, with small (29 mm) and standard (31 mm) options available for hand comfort.

If you need space-saving gear or plan to fly to a river, a 4-piece breakdown paddle is handy because it packs down for transport; the Aqua-Bound Shred is an example of a packraft-friendly 4-piece design. Many takedown paddles are designed to preserve performance while offering travel convenience.

Larger blade areas (roughly in the 700–850 sq cm range) deliver more power and quicker acceleration for creeking and steep water, while smaller or all-around blades favor efficiency and easier catch for play and river running. For reference, high-power models like the Werner Powerhouse use a big blade (about 82 sq in) to emphasize strong strokes and momentum.
