A snug, secure fit is critical so straps hold the PFD and helmet in place during waves and flips. Look for a Coast Guard‑approved Type III PFD with 16–22 lbs buoyancy and a helmet meeting ASTM F1492 standards; models like the NRS Ninja offer the adjustable straps and storage that help keep gear where it belongs.

Match paddle length to your height and the raft size—most rafting paddles fall between 190–210 cm. Fiberglass or carbon fiber shafts provide lighter, more responsive strokes, and paddles like the Werner Powerhouse are common choices for Class I–IV rivers.

Hard-shell rafts give the best control in intense currents, while framed rafts add rigidity for multi‑day expeditions. Inflatable self‑bailing rafts are ideal for mild to moderate commercial trips, but reinforced heavy‑duty PVC or Hypalon models are better suited for Class III–V extremes.

Use waterproof roll‑top dry bags made from PVC or similar fabrics and double-bag valuables by placing a small dry bag inside a larger one. Bringing several sizes of dry bags helps keep clothing, food, and electronics organized and protected across an inflatable or framed raft.

Build a kit around the 4:3:2:1:1 principle — four carabiners, three pulleys, two prussics, one flip line, and one throw bag — and include a sturdy throw bag and flip line for quick rescues. Complement that with a Z‑drag rescue setup, cam straps in nylon webbing, and a river knife to handle rigging and gear repairs on the water.
