Whitewater Kayaking

Think about the activity and your weight: river-running boats track and carry speed, freestyle playboats are lower-volume for tricks, and creek boats handle drops and shallow runs. Kayak geometry and volume are the two biggest fit factors, so match a hull that suits your intended rapids and paddling style.

A Type III PFD with about 15.5 lbs of buoyancy should fit snugly without riding up and allow full arm motion for strokes and rolls. Models like the NRS Ion or the Stohlquist Rocker offer different cut and comfort features, so try sizes and lift your arms to confirm freedom of movement.

Bungee sprayskirts are easier to don and shed water quickly, which makes them a good choice for beginners in milder rapids. Randed (sealed) skirts give a tighter seal for advanced waterfall drops, so match skirt type to the difficulty and your re-entry comfort.

Match shaft length and shape (straight or bent) and feather angle to your height and paddling style, then pick a stiff blade material like carbon-aramid-fiberglass for responsive strokes. Lightweight multi-use blades such as the AT2 blend durability and stiffness, which helps when steering in strong currents.

Choose a high-impact helmet with a non-absorbent, quick-draining shell that covers the temples and nape without restricting head movement. Try helmets on to ensure the brim doesn't obstruct vision and that straps keep the shell snug during rolls or impacts.
