For wet, muddy slot canyons, 9–10mm ropes are the best all-around balance of durability and handling, while 8mm suits experienced users who want lighter weight despite lower friction and abrasion resistance. Ropes like the Imlay Kolob are built for gritty slot abrasion, and you should match diameter to your descender to ensure proper friction control.

Many technical slot canyons call for a descender that handles variable friction across 8–11mm ropes; the Sterling ATS offers adjustable friction and a guide/belay mode for longer or multi-pitch rappels. If you prefer a compact, multi-feature tool without belay mode, devices like the Sqwurel work well on mid-range diameters, but always verify device compatibility with thinner 8mm lines.

Oval carabiners are useful for Prusik loops and minimizing rope twist, while pear-shaped lockables feed descenders more smoothly and reduce the chance of binding. Choose robust aluminum lockable gates with rated strengths around 20–25kN to handle rigging, belays, and the knocks that come with muddy canyons.

Pick a pack or dry bag sized to carry a wet rope up to 60m without excess bulk—many canyoneering packs have dedicated dry storage and waterproof coatings for full immersion. If you're hauling a gritty 60m line or a bulky 9–10mm rope, look for roomy internal space and reinforced straps to keep gear compact and protected.

Wear canyon shoes that fit snugly over neoprene socks to prevent slipping and reduce blistering in waterlogged slots. A close, secure fit combined with sticky rubber soles and good toe protection helps when edging on slippery rock and hauling through confined canyon sections.
