The mountains always provide good times.

Early summer mountain pursuits can run the gamut between trail running and hiking to skiing the last remains of snow that still cling to the tops of peaks. With activities like this in mind, Patagonia designed its Men's Capilene Lightweight Crew Top. This lightweight baselayer can be worn on its own during cool weather runs and hikes, or layered under a midlayer when you strap the skis on to get a few June turns. Made with an eco-friendly polyester, it wicks moisture, so you stay dry when you work up a sweat. A 35 UPF rating puts the stop on harmful UV-rays, while a odor control treatment prevents any sour smells from taking hold after a couple of days of fun hogging.

Amazing shirt, but be warned, it's thin.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I have been focusing on my base layers this year with aspirations of controlling how sweaty I get. I sweat, I do not perspire! Therefore, I needed good first layers to move moisture away from my body both when I am hiking and when I am running. I purchased two short-sleeved lightweight and two long-sleeved shirts, one light weight and one midweight. I have been mostly running but I have gotten out a couple times snowshoeing with these.

For all activities that I have used them for they have been excellent. They do soak up sweat but they also get rid of it very quickly, even with additional layers over top. As the only layer when I am running they are saturated in some places but much less so than other shirts I typically run in (I live in the PNW and it is still very humit as of writing this review). In fact, they are so good that I have been running in the capilene shirts almost exclusively since I purchased them (about 5-6 weeks)

The first thing you'll notice is that this shirt, even the midweight, is extremely thin. Typically I only wear a shirt or shorts once and then wash it. However, after a couple of washings of these shirts, I noticed that they had signs of wear. There were little snags and distortions in the fabric. I began to worry that these would not last long enough to make them worth the cost. I thought about buying several more to lighten the burden but then decided to do a little testing first. Since these shirts are treated with polygene they should not stink as much as a typical polyester. So I wore one shirt for two weeks running 4 times per week and hang drying it after rather than washing. I ran once in a standard poly shirt and let it hang dry for the two weeks as a control. The standard poly, as you can imagine, stunk after a couple of days. The capilene got a little funky but not unbearable. Even better, when I start to sweat in a standard poly that already has the funk, it stinks even worse when it gets wet; not the polygene capilene. Though they were a little funky, they never got worse even resoaked in my sweat the following day. I then decided that I would repeat the test but rinse the shirts after each run in my post-run shower. This time there was a slight funk but barely noticeable (and no complaints from the wife which is the real test).

In the end, I decided not to purchase any more shirts but instead wash the shirts much less than my typical running stuff. Because the shirts are so thin, I rinse them in my post-run shower and they are dry and ready by morning for the next run. This cuts down on the number of washes and will, in theory, increase the longevity of the shirts.

Amazing shirt and, in a way, cuts down on washing and waste as a result. When I need another one I will be purchasing another one of these shirts without thinking twice.

Great go to long T for spring and fall

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Because this shirt is thin and breathes, it makes for a great shirt to hike or run in if there is a slight chill. I have also used to keep from getting a sun burn in the summer and it was not too hot. Would recommend to a friend

Perfect for the right temp range

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

This is my favorite running shirt. It's very lightweight and breathable. If you need a very light baselayer that gives you a bit more than your t-shirt, look no further. I would say to mind your comfort level as far a temp goes. For me, this is perfect in the 45-65 degree days. This is perfect for those early morning or late evening spring runs. I wore it in 40 degrees and was thinking I really needed something more. I also love the colors. I picked up the medium with yellow sleeves. It's a good fit and the yellow arms provide visibility to drivers. I'm going to add the midweight version to my lineup for those cooler mornings.

    Just what I needed

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

I was looking for a nice lightweight wicking shirt to wear as a base under my ski gear and this is exactly what I needed. It will not be an extremely warm base layer in colder conditions, but I plan to wear something a little heavier over it. I wanted something a little loose fitting because I do not like the skin-tight layers, and I went with a large which works perfect!

    Solid Gear-Works for Women, too

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

As a wildlife biologist who works outside year round, solid gear is a life saver. Also, as a fuller figured woman biologist, it can be hard to find women's gear that fits comfortably and appropriately, that also isn't a billion dollars. This shirt was on sale as a men's item but I figured I'd give it a shot. This baselayer has been keeping me warm and dry, even while driving a boat 30mph in the predawn hours on NY lakes. Warm, comfortable and durable, I'm thrilled to find a piece of gear that fits and is actually comfortable. And it actually stays in place and doesn't ride up when you move, rare qualities in a baselayer. I've recommended it to all my colleagues, male and female.

    Lightweight Performance and reliability

Love the lightweight caps from Patagonia. This shirt is made for active performance in a variety of situations. Stays cool and blocks out the sun. Can't ask for much more in a lighter base layer. Highly recommended!! Backcountry got it to me super fast. #goatworthy

      Excellent Sun Shirt

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Size Bought: Large

You never get to work in the shade when you’re installing solar panels. When you spend 6-10 hours a day in the scorching summer sun you need a shirt that’s cool but also offers excellent protection from the sun and this shirt nailed it. The fabric is extremely thin yet still blocks out the sun enough that I have had no issues with sun exposure wearing it day after day. I’m usually between a medium and a large and choose to go with the large since I’m not looking for a tight baselayer like fit. This shirt is comfy, looks good, and offers great protection from the sun. It’ll stand up to a little abuse but as you would expect from something so light and airy it’s far from indestructible.

      camp wear

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

I keep the top and bottom to this capilene set in my sleeping bag at all times. light, breathable, comfortable and not too warm. I sleep in these all year round

      Super light!

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

If you need an incredibly light base layer that you can use for just about anything, this is the one. I liked the minimalist thumb loops. I ended up returning it because I wanted something thicker, but if you're in the market for a lightweight, this is solid.

      thin, lightweight performance

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: small

They lightweight capilene top is great. However beware it is pretty thin, awesome for spring/summer/fall adventures where you need a light layer to protect from the sun or great as a next to skin layer in the winter. The fit on this has been relaxed from previous years so it is more of a casual cut instead of skin tight. Minimal thumb loops are awesome and help keep the sleeves in the place when doing aerobic activities. Shirt is super comfortable, and looks sharp in the Forge Grey color. I would highly recommend.

The Capilene material has been updated for this season and wicks moisture better than before and doesn't have the stink factor of previous versions.

Favorite Base for High Aerobic Activity

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large

In my opinion, this is the best base layer for high aerobic activities(touring, climbing, ect..). The material is extremely comfortable, wicks well, and dries much faster than merino. I absolutely love the fit - not crazy tight like some base layers out there but not to loose either. Multi-color options rock as well. Pair it under an R1 and you are set to tackle whatever mountain pursuit your heart desires.

      Slick wicking!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

I love an under layer that performs. This shirt will keep you feeling cool while you sweat and Patagonia is the best. Doesn't get stinky like a lot of other tech under layers, feels super light and has a great cut. I don't love the thumb loops, but that is something easily fixed with a scissors. Buy this, you won't regret it.

      Over Achiever

Picked up a pair of these after a 5 day trip in the Guadelupe's that started in sub freezing temps and high winds and ended in the mid 50's. The first thing on my was 'different base layer'. The lightweight Capelene fits the bill. Fit is perfect. Under a mid or top layer I forget it's there. Wicks great and is very warm.

You get what you pay for.

It's really comfortable and I like that Patagonia is making multi colored base layers that still function great, wick well and keep you warm. You get what you pay for with material quality and cut.

        A Solid Performer

Wore the white version for two weeks straight on the JMT this summer. It was mostly brown by the end.

        Pros:
        -Super soft and comfy
        -Did not get smelly
-Light and breathable (handled high temps well)
        -UV protection

        Cons:
        -None

I am a 42 inch chest. I wear a Medium in the Patagonia regular fit jackets. Should I go with a large or medium with the Capilene?

You could go either size with this. The medium will be more form fitting and a great thin layer. The large is going to be loose and might be a choice if you are going to wear this as a stand alone layer. The lightweight fabric is pretty thin but they have relaxed the fit a little from years past so it isn't so skin tight when wearing as a stand alone layer.
