Just as important as your jacket.

Throw on the Patagonia Men's Capilene Midweight Crew Top before heading to the resort to shred pow all day in happiness. The Polartec Power Grid fabric provides superior warmth, breathability, and moisture-wicking performance for long-lasting comfort, and also has a smooth face to make layering a breeze. Offset shoulder seams and a flatlock construction do a fine job of minimizing chafing, while the gusseted underarms deliver a full range of motion. Make sure to slip your thumbs through the elastic loops for secure hand coverage and extra protection from the biting wind. The odor-fighting Polygiene treatment helps keep the amount of times you wash it to a minimum.

    Love me some Capilene.
This shirt is my go to in both 100 degree heat as well as 0 degree days on the mountain. 'nuff said.
(It also is great at keeping the BO under control, which other people certainly appreciate)

    Perfect.

Neck is not too tight and not too loose. It doesnt hold the funk of shredding all day either like some layers. I will be buying these from now on for sure.

    Must have

I bought this for my boyfriend even though he already has about 4 of these, he HAD to have a black one too. I'm not kidding when I say that he wears one of these everyday so it was worth it to add a couple more of these base layers to the arsenal. However, these guys are so breathable, they can be worn for several days of running, biking, backpacking, etc. without washing and still be fresh enough to cozy up next to (#GirlFriendApproved). He has worn this in 16* snow in the Tetons and 80* sun in San Diego to keep the sun off. This base layer does it all and doesn't quit.

    excellent value

if you can't be bothered with maintaining a cumbersome wool base layer, this is the solution.
Garment feels nice against the skin, even when wet, it dries fast, and the over all quality of stitching and details are just excellent. And at this price you can afford to have an extra layer in the pack for the way home/down.

    Patagonia Capilene

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

Patagonia capilene is generally accepted as one of the best synthetic baselayers around. I'd have to agree. Knowing its a patagonia piece adds to the excellence because i know the quality is there and it was produced with thought about sustainability.

This is my go to base layer. I wear it right under my shell for touring on 20-30 degree days and with a 1/4 zip Capilene for colder days (10-20). Great wicking so you don't get cold at the top. It's not a fitted layer which is nice for casual use. Patagonia is on point with the Capilene line. I look forward to getting a lightweight for hiking this summer.

    Great Base Layer

The Capilene midweight and thermal weight base layers are a staple for my winter running. The high tech fabric wicks moisture exceptionally well and does an excellent job of retaining heat. Topped off with a windproof shell, you are good to go with temperatures down to the upper teens - and much lower if you add another layer. The quality of these garments is first rate - currently my first choice in base layer winter running gear.

    For my bro

I ordered this for myself initially, but after trying it on, it was just too big. I'm 6'0, 170 lbs. I have some older capilene from Patagonia and the Large fit great. I ordered a Large with this one and ended up giving this to my brother who is 6'2, 215. The large was a great fit for him, and he loves it. Seems to fit more true to size than previous years. Great base layer for any occasion.

I bought this as a christmas present for my brother, he loves it! It keeps him nice and toasty when he is snowboarding. They breathe really well and don't hold in too much stank. It is a great quality item, what you should expect from patagonia. Get for cold days.

Go to next to skin ski piece

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: xl

This Midweight Capilene piece from Patagonia is my go to for ski days. Lots of versatility here, On warmer days it can be worn all by itself under your jacket, on colder days I layer a lightweight fleece on top. Comfortable against the skin and surprisingly warm for how thin it is due to the interior grid pattern. I especially appreciate the thumb loops, not your traditional wrist gaiter creating bulk under your glove and jacket but still does the job of keeping the sleeve from bunching up.

    Great all-around top

First of all, thank you to Patagonia and Backcountry.com for hand selecting me to test and review the Capilene Mid-Weight crew top.

For those cool days (35-50), this top has become a center piece for me. From snowboarding to running, I have found myself wearing this shirt more than any other in my closet over the last few months. The Power Grid fabric from Polar-Tech is very comfortable, lightweight and breathable. Even on high-intensity runs, I find that it regulates my temp better than some of my running-specific long sleeve shirts. Heck, it's so comfortable that I lounge around the house in it most mornings. The thumb loops are great for ensuring no air will get into the wrist area when wearing gloves.

Though I do really like this top, I don't know that I like the fit for what the top is supposed to be - a base layer. Yes, it fits true to size and the cut is very comfortable. The build is certainly what we've all come to expect from Patagonia - high quality of course. But being a base layer, I expected this to have a close-to-body fit. Patagonia describes the fit of this top as "Slim fit" but it simply is not. It fits just like a normal long sleeve. I have the Patagonia Capilene Thermal-Weight hooded top and that is also billed as a slim fit and it certainly is what I expected a slim fit to be - close-to-body fit but not too snug. Long story short, I think the cut - though it is comfortable - needs to be updated and I think if it did fit how a slim fit should, it would function as a base layer even better than it already does.

All in all, I really do enjoy this top. Like I said, I love it so much that I tend to just lounge around the house in it because it is so comfortable. It is my go-to layer for chilly days in the outdoors whether its a relaxing hike or a high-intensity trail run. I just wish it fit a bit slimmer - like a base layer should be.

    Decent choice

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

Purchased this item to help keep me warm on cooler days when spending a lot of time outside. Have used it a couple of times and it does the job, fits true to size and does everything it claims to do. Only knock is the comfort which I'd say is average as the interior grid pattern isn't the most comfortable feel - at least for me. I have Patagonia's capilene bottoms (mid weights) and consider them ultra-comfortable. These tops I'd say are average comfort. If considering buying another top I'd probably do more comparison shopping with other brands to better judge feel whereas with the capilene bottoms I'd buy more without hesitation.

    mid weight versatility

This a great update to Patagonia's previous best selling baselayer, Capilene 3. It's the most versatile baselayer Patagonia offers, and the best for year round comfort. The new fabric has an interior grid pattern based off of Patagonia R1. It helps capture warmth when you're cold, and helps move hot air and moisture out when you need it to. Layers super well with an R1 on top, and handles stink well with Polygeine anti-bacterial treatment.

      Great for riding in.

this top is perfect for those days where every layer you wear needs to be a little thicker than normal. strip down to this and it is surprisingly cool, yet adds a lot of warmth when layered. It's nice and long so you can tuck it into your bottom layers so you don't get that dreaded draft when your jacket gets lifted up.
