For single-pitch sport and trad routes a single rope is simplest since it absorbs fall energy with dynamic stretch; look for UIAA-certified single ropes. If you’re doing multi-pitch or glacier travel, consider half or twin ropes and pay attention to diameter—thinner ropes under 10mm save weight while 9.5–11mm options trade a bit of stretch for more durability.

Think about the type of climbing you do: sport harnesses and quickdraws suit bolted routes while trad harnesses add extra gear loops for rack organization. Fit is critical—waist and leg loops should be snug but not restrictive, and features like padded waistbelts and breathable mesh (as in many Black Diamond designs) add comfort on long routes; most harnesses are rated around 15 kN.

Most climbers size down about 1–2 sizes from street shoes for better precision on edges, and shoes commonly come in half-pairs (for example EU 38–45). Choose lace-up models when you need micro-adjustment for steep routes, and hook-and-loop styles when you want quick on-and-off for bouldering sessions.

A proper helmet should conform to your head shape without pressure points and feel secure when you move; try one on with your hair and any headlamp you’ll use. For alpine and rock use pick helmets that meet UIAA/CE EN 12492 standards and offer specified top-impact protection (typically rated to 2 kN).

For sport climbing non-locking, lightweight carabiners and quickdraws like the Trango Phase work well for clipping bolts quickly, while trad climbing often calls for locking, pear-shaped carabiners such as the Petzl Attache to secure protection. Pay attention to material and strength ratings—most carabiners are rated around 20–27 kN gate-closed and some locking models like the Attache list about 24 kN.
