A 1x closed-gear drivetrain simplifies shifting and reduces clutter, though you’ll typically pair it with a 10–11‑speed cassette and accept a narrower gear range.

Models like the Cervélo P2 and the BMC Timemachine TT02 provide affordable aluminum construction with tri-specific geometry that’s easy to fit and adjust. You can add carbon wheel or aero fork upgrades later to chase extra speed while keeping cockpit adjustability as the setup priority.
