Clincher tires with butyl tubes still make sense for rough training rides thanks to their puncture resistance and durability.

Most riders find 25–28mm is the performance sweet spot, giving a rounder contact patch, lower rolling resistance, and more comfort than a narrow 23mm. Make sure your rims are tubeless-ready if you plan to run a 28mm tubeless tire to get the intended tire shape and pressure.

Think about your priorities: butyl tubes are heavier (typically over 100g) and durable for training on rough roads, while latex or TPU tubes are lighter (around 60–80g) and favor short, smooth TTs where speed matters. Latex offers great elasticity but higher air loss, whereas TPU brings puncture resistance and recyclability.

In practice, tubeless setups can save roughly 3–7 watts by removing tube friction, and top tubeless Crr values (around 0.0022) translate to significant time gains on long courses. Models like the Vittoria Corsa Pro Speed TLR lead the pack for low rolling resistance at about 6.7W for a 28mm tire.

For everyday training on rough roads choose clincher tires with butyl tubes for durability and puncture resistance, while race day calls for supple, lightweight race casings—cotton-wrapped or thin-tread tires that prioritize speed. Expect race-oriented tires like the Michelin Power Time Trial to score highly on rolling resistance but to wear faster than tougher training options.
