Check for ASTM F2040 and CE EN1077 certification—Class A offers harder earmuff protection while Class B uses softer ear coverage. For rotational protection, consider MIPS-equipped helmets like the Scott Flow Pro MIPS, which can reduce brain-shear forces by about 40–50%, and look for RECCO reflectors for added rescue capability.

Backcountry helmets are designed to balance protection with features for remote travel, and models with active ventilation controls let you open vents while skinning and close them on cold descents. Consider backcountry-specific options that also add rescue tech—POC Obex MIPS, for example, pairs RECCO capability with a relatively light 450 g build.

Look for integrated goggle clips, removable ear pads, and NFC Medical ID to make transitions between resort and cold-weather setups easier. In-mold constructions fuse polycarbonate to EPS for lighter all-day wear (often 200–300 g), while removable pads improve goggle compatibility and allow you to add audio or extra insulation.
