Think about gate combos and construction: sport climbers often prefer a bent lower gate for easy rope clipping and a straight top gate for bolt clips, and many quickdraws use hot-forged aluminum alloys for strength. Wire gates shave weight and reduce gate flutter while keylock noses help prevent snagging on a pack or sling.

Shorter 10–12cm slings work well for direct bolt clipping on sport routes, while a 17cm sling helps extend trad gear to reduce rope drag on multi-pitch climbs. Packs often include mixes or 4–6 unit sets so you can stock short sport draws and longer trad draws for longer routes.

Dyneema slings are ideal for alpine or long approaches because they cut weight and offer high durability, while nylon resists abrasion better on rough rock. If you’re minimizing pack weight, look for Dyneema slings in the 10–14mm width range to balance comfort and strength.

Alpine-specific ultralight quickdraws can be a smart choice on long approaches where every ounce matters; models like the Petzl Spirit Express weigh about 3.2 oz per unit. Just confirm the pack meets UIAA/CE certifications and that you’re comfortable trading a bit of bulk for lower weight on sustained routes.

Carabiner shape and nose type matter: asymmetric D shapes improve rope glide and keylock noses reduce gate hang-ups, and gate type (bent vs straight vs wire) influences clipping speed. Also check major axis strength ratings around 20–25 kN and gate-open numbers near 7–10 kN, and consider premium options like the DMM Alpha if clipping ease is a priority.
