A 1x setup simplifies shifting and can reduce aero drag, with systems like SRAM Force 1x12 offering roughly a 3-watt savings versus a 2x. A 2x (53/39 or compact 50/34) still gives closer gear steps and higher top-end gearing for hillier or faster finishing efforts.

For hilly courses, go with a wider cassette such as 11-32t paired with a compact 50/34 or semi-compact 52/36 chainset to make climbs easier. On mostly flat courses an 11-25t cassette with a 53/39 chainset lets you maintain a higher cadence and better top-end speed.

Steeper seat tube angles and a forward saddle position help maintain an aero posture without overly closing hip angles, which is why many TT frames use that geometry. Adjustable aerobars and integrated cockpits let you fine-tune reach and stack on a carbon frame, so a precise bike fit is worth doing to avoid fatigue on long efforts.

Deep rims over 60mm or solid disc wheels deliver the biggest aerodynamic gains on flat, high-speed courses—the same setups WorldTour riders use when averaging up to 50 km/h. If you expect crosswinds or need more stable handling, consider shallower deep-section carbon rims rather than a very deep rim or disc.

Electronic groupsets like SRAM RED eTAP AXS provide very precise, consistent shifting under load, which many time-trialists prefer for clean gear changes. Mechanical choices such as Shimano Dura-Ace bar-end shifters or a GRX RX810 1x11 offer straightforward reliability, while options like the Rotor 1x13 pair a wide 13-speed range with hydraulic actuation for a different control/shifting balance.
