Gaiters

Trail running gaiters are the lightest choice for ultralight backpacking and day hikes, providing splash protection rather than full waterproofing. They typically wrap around the top of the shoe to just above the ankle to keep pebbles and sand out.

Backpacking gaiters range from water-resistant coatings to fully waterproof breathable membranes, so many handle rain and small stream crossings well. Mid-height models like the Black Diamond Cirque use BD.dry fabric or a coated lower half to shed water while keeping the upper breathable.

For brushy terrain and lingering snow, go taller — mid-calf to knee-high backpacking gaiters give better coverage against vegetation and postholing. If you need maximum protection, mountaineering gaiters are full-length and often measure around 17 inches in large sizes.

Mountaineering gaiters fasten to sturdy footwear with straps, hooks, and reinforced closures designed for mountaineering, ski, pac, and hiking boots. Attachment styles vary by model, so full-length gaiters are typically built to work with heavier boots and crampon-compatible setups.

Abrasion-resistant fabrics like Cordura combined with waterproof membranes such as Gore-Tex make gaiters most durable in heavy underbrush; Outdoor Research's Crocodile pairs Cordura with Gore-Tex for that purpose. Nylon lower halves and coated fabrics also help resist wear, while brushed tricot fleece versions stay quiet for hunting.
