Backpacking Food

For multi-day, go with lightweight freeze-dried and dehydrated meals since they require no refrigeration and save weight. Brands like Pinnacle Foods offer 12-minute pouch meals in tekpak omnidegradable packaging, which keeps meals compact and suited for remote trips.

To cut bulk, favor single-serve pouches under 5 ounces and portion-controlled bars or jerky sticks that fit into pockets for on-trail access. Flexible items like tortillas or pouches compress around gear without crushing, making them easy to stow in a slim pack.

Yes, many instant oatmeal packets and quick grains can be cold-soaked when water is available, avoiding stove use. Quaker-style instant oatmeal is noted for cold-soak versatility and can provide around 400 calories once you add nuts and dried fruit for extra energy.

Choose protein pouches and shelf-stable meats like jerky or salami for high-energy, cold-weather efforts because they’re non-perishable and easy to eat on the move. Nuts and oils deliver high calorie density (over 100 calories per ounce), while tuna or chicken pouches give lean protein without cooking.

Packaging varies from puncture-resistant retort pouches made of layered polyester, aluminum foil, and polypropylene to tekpak omnidegradable paper-bio-foil that breaks down more responsibly. Expect sturdy materials for long trips and look for omnidegradable-certified options if reduced environmental impact matters to you.
