For mostly paved, groomed trails, flexible Category A trail runners or lightweight hiking shoes work best; they typically weigh 6–10 ounces per shoe and offer plenty of breathability. Brands like Salomon specialize in responsive midsoles that feel lively on flat ground.

If you'll encounter sustained wet conditions or frequent stream crossings, a waterproof membrane like Gore-Tex helps keep feet dry, though it reduces breathability and can trap heat. For hot, high-exertion days on dry trails, a non-waterproof trail runner will ventilate better.

Moderate trails with roots and rocks often benefit from a mid-cut or high-cut collar that protects ankles without overly restricting mobility; collar height is commonly measured in inches to compare fit. Try a mid-weight Category B shoe or a lighter Category C boot if you want a balance of mobility and support.

Stiff Category C–D boots normally require more break-in time than flexible trail runners, so expect several days of progressive wear before long treks. These boots often use leather or durable synthetics and heavier midsoles, which contribute to the typical 2–3 pounds per pair weight and the extended break-in.

For heavy loads and technical terrain, a stiffer midsole in Category C or very stiff Category D mountaineering boots provides better support and protection against rock bruising.
