Moderate trails with roots and rocks often benefit from a mid-cut or high-cut collar that protects ankles without overly restricting mobility; collar height is commonly measured in inches to compare fit. Try a mid-weight Category B shoe or a lighter Category C boot if you want a balance of mobility and support.

Stiff Category C–D boots normally require more break-in time than flexible trail runners, so expect several days of progressive wear before long treks.
