Bike Hitch Racks

If you mostly ride road, hybrid, or lighter mountain bikes, a hanging rack is simple and lightweight and works well for shorter trips. Platform racks support bikes by the wheels, handle heavier loads up to about 60 lbs per bike, and are a better choice for e-bikes or long highway trips—models like the Thule T2 Pro XTR show how stable a tray system can be.

Check your vehicle’s receiver: 1.25-inch hitches are commonly used for lighter loads up to roughly 200 lbs total, while 2-inch receivers suit heavier setups and racks rated 35–60 lbs per bike. Also confirm the rack’s total capacity—some platforms support up to 300 lbs—so you don’t overload the hitch or compromise safety.

Heavy-duty platform racks are designed for e-bikes and full-suspension frames because they support wheels and reduce sway; look for models rated 60 lbs per bike like many premium platforms. Hanging racks often struggle with women's or full-suspension geometries unless you add frame adapters, so verify compatibility before buying.

Most platform racks accept tire widths up to about 5 inches and wheel diameters from 20 to 29 inches, and they use ratcheting wheel straps and sliding trays to secure the wheels without touching the frame. If you have very fat tires, double-check the tray spacing and strap design to ensure a snug fit.

Tilt-release levers and swing-away mechanisms let you access the hatch or tailgate without removing bikes, but you must account for vehicle clearance so the rack doesn’t scrape the ground when tilted. Models like the Thule T2 Pro XTR emphasize smooth tilt action, and choosing a rack with a solid tilt or swing spec helps avoid clearance problems on steep driveways or rough roads.
