For 50–60°F conditions you’ll usually want a semi-dry suit or a thick 7mm fullsuit to keep core heat while diving. Semi-dry designs reduce flushing and glued and blind-stitched seams improve insulation, and attached hoods add extra warmth in the lower end of that range.

A wetsuit should feel like a snug second skin without cutting off movement. Look for stretchy neoprene panels and pre-stretched, anatomical designs—models like the O'Neill Psycho One use superstretch neoprene to preserve shoulder and knee mobility while keeping a close fit.

Glued and blind-stitched seams help prevent flushing and keep you warmer in cool water, whereas flatlock stitching is more flexible and comfortable in warm conditions. Adding waterproof tapes or liquid tape seals increases warmth, and hydrophobic coatings can reduce drag for performance.

Shorty wetsuits, vests, and short johns are ideal in 62–75°F water when you need maximum flexibility for surfing or swimming. Surf-specific suits like the Rip Curl Flashbomb also reduce water resistance and use quick-dry thermal linings for variable surf conditions.

If you’re diving in roughly 50–60°F water, semi-dry suits or thick 7mm fullsuits provide the insulation and reduced flushing most divers need. Reserve a dry suit for extreme icy-water conditions where full separation from water is required for safety and prolonged exposure protection.
