Integrated STI levers must align with your shifter indexing, so pick a unit that matches your drivetrain: for example, Shimano 105 R7000 is tuned for precise 11-speed indexing. If the lever’s indexing doesn’t match 2x11 or 2x12 standards, you can get rubbing or poor shift feel.

Material choice trades weight for cost and stiffness: forged aluminum or composite bodies are durable, while carbon fiber blades on high-end models can save about 20% of weight. Expect typical pairs to weigh 150–300g and look for stainless steel pivots and cables for better corrosion resistance.

For wet or muddy conditions and mixed terrain, long-pull levers paired with V-brakes or mechanical discs offer stronger actuation—long-pull is around 15mm of cable pull.
