Paddling Essentials

European paddles have broader blades for higher-angle strokes and are common for recreational and whitewater use, while Greenland paddles favor low‑angle strokes and a more traditional feel that many beginners enjoy. Touring and SUP paddles are generally longer—some touring/SUP options reach up to 240cm—so match paddle length to your craft and preferred stroke.

A Coast Guard‑approved PFD that wraps the torso snugly with adjustable straps is essential for open-water outings to prevent riding up and ensure buoyancy. For open-water use consider inherently inflatable life jackets, while auto-inflating models like the ISLE Lifejacket are a good choice for nearshore safety.

Spray skirts typically come in nylon or polyester‑Lycra, and waterproofing depends on both material and correct fit; measure your cockpit coaming and pick a skirt size that creates a snug seal. A properly fitted skirt prevents water entry during splashes and makes recreational paddling or touring much more secure.

For cold-water paddling look for neoprene wetsuits, hoods, and booties in the 3–5mm range to trap heat and reduce chill. Add neoprene gloves or pogies that attach to the paddle shaft for wind protection and grip, and layer with a drysuit or dry top if conditions are very cold.

Paddle floats act as outriggers for re-entry, while a bilge pump and a compact kayak repair kit let you manage water and small hull damage away from shore. Bring float bags, deck rigging, a spare paddle, and consider comfort items like the Cloud Seat for SUP-to-kayak conversion on longer trips.
