Yellow Mountaineering Boots

Think about the terrain and whether you’ll need crampons: B0 and A are flexible for summer walking while B2–B3 or C–D scale boots give the torsional stiffness needed for glaciers and ice. Match stiffness to activity — B1/B2 are good for mixed winter and technical approaches, B3/C–D suit full alpine and ice climbing.

Match boot stiffness to the crampon class you’ll use: B1 pairs with C1, B2 with C2, and B3 with C3 crampons for full ice and glacier work. For example, fully rigid models like the La Sportiva Nepal Evo have front and rear welts for C3 crampon security on steep ice.

For cold, high-altitude objectives choose insulated or double/plastic boots, which offer multilayer warmth and plastic shells for extreme conditions, while three-season boots stay lighter for warmer months. Three-season options often weigh under 3 lbs per pair, whereas plastic/double constructions tend to be heavier, typically over 4 lbs.

Aim for a snug, downturned last with enough toe room and try them on with thick mountaineering socks to get the right volume, since sizing runs narrow for technical edging. Expect leather or insulated synthetic uppers to need a break-in period and choose higher shafts on stiffer models for added ankle support.

Materials like full-grain leather, rugged synthetics, or plastic shells determine abrasion resistance and waterproofing, and removable insulating liners add warmth and fast drying. Also look for gaiter-integrated uppers for snow exclusion and remember DWR treatments on waterproof fabrics will need renewal over time.
