Aim for a pad around 36x48 inches with 4–5 inch foam thickness to cover uneven terrain and protect your landings. Hinged designs from brands like Black Diamond or Metolius make carrying easier, and high-density polyurethane or EVA foam with UIAA-rated drop testing can offer tested impact protection up to about 10 kN.

Liquid chalk is often preferred for sweaty, high-intensity sessions because it adheres to the skin and reduces reapplication between hard attempts. Many climbers still carry loose chalk or a chalk ball in a nylon webbing chalk bag with breathable mesh for longer sessions and quick access.

Beginners usually benefit from neutral or moderate geometries like the La Sportiva Mythos, which prioritize comfort and easier technique development. Advanced climbers favor aggressive, down-turned profiles for steep overhangs and tiny footholds, and they typically size down 1–2 sizes for increased precision.

Harnesses are generally optional for ropeless bouldering, but a versatile option like the Petzl Sama can be useful if you add occasional top-rope spotting or need adjustable leg loops for dynamic movement. Bring a helmet when working problems under loose rock or in crowded outdoor fields, and prefer UIAA-rated helmets when impact certification is a concern.
