Just as I thought it would be. Solid North Face.
It's a footprint
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
The Stormbreak-1 footprint is exactly what I was looking for in a footprint. It's small, relatively light weight, fits the base of the tent, and keeps the bottom side of the Stormbreak-1 tent clean & protected. It does it's job as advertised.
In regards to the Stormbreak-1 tent, I've used it 6-7 times in the California Sierra's and its been a great little tent. Extremely easy to assemble, enough room for my 6'1" 185pds frame, and ample room in the vestibule to store my gear. On one of my trips we had 40+ mph winds and were just above 9000ft. With the rainfly on, I was comfy, cozy, and protected within the Stormbreak-1. It actually held up better than I had expected against the wind and found the tent to be very sturdy. I haven't yet had the opportunity to use it in the rain or snow. I only wish the tent had more screen material to make looking out more enjoyable, but on the other hand, the thicker material walls provide more privacy when changing clothes, etc. and probably adds to the stability of the tent. I definitely recommend this tent for those on a budget.
It's a good footprint, don't get me wrong, but it's a little thinner than I would really like. Plus, the length is weird to me.
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
The North Face has long been known as the best option for personal shelter on the mountain. I'd only heard how nice their other tents were, however. After spending a lot of time investigating tents and sharing space in friends tents I decided that ultra light has very little else to offer than that. I wanted a lightweight shelter for one. I also didn't feel like breaking the bank on a tent.
After looking into solo tents made by a variety of high quality tent makers I kept returning to square one. Then one day I stumbled onto the Stormbreak 1 from The North Face. I immediately purchased it and went home to set it up in the living room. I was impressed by the construction and quality of material. At 3.5 pounds packed it isn't the lightest option. But this tent has stouter fabric which appears to be more breathable than all these lighter weight designs.
I took to the high country to see just how awesome this tent was. The tent carries light and takes little space. I camped in the dark, set up in the wind without struggle. The wind blew hard all night. A lesser tent would have folded. Then is snowed. The tent didn't even shudder. It is the perfect solo shelter. I had no condensation, leaking, or other concern.
The ground cloth and fly can also be used as a shelter in summer months when snow, rain, or bugs are not present. Look forward to many more trips with this thing.
