Shelters & Tarps

Shapes affect wind shedding and usable space: rectangular tarps offer the most versatile pitching options like A-frame or lean-to, diamond cuts shed wind better, and hexagonal shapes give extra sheltered floor area. For windy conditions favor a diamond or a low ridgeline setup; if you want modular pitching and airflow, a rectangular or hex layout is more adaptable.

For solo insulated use, a 5x7 foot tarp or an ultralight model like the Mountain Laurel Designs Monk Flat Tarp (under 10 oz) keeps weight down while covering a hammock or solo pad. Two-person or bushcraft setups are more comfortable with a 7x10 or 8x10 tarp to provide room for gear and a sheltered vestibule.

Dyneema Composite Fabric and silnylon are top choices when you want ultralight strength, and Dyneema-backed flat tarps like Hyperlite Mountain Gear deliver notable durability without heavy bulk. If puncture resistance and wet-weather performance matter more than ounces, 70D nylon (which tests very waterproof), silpoly, or heavier cotton canvas (10–36 mil) provide better abrasion and weather protection.

Yes. Look for tarps designed for hammock integration or wider solo cuts like a 5x7 flat tarp; ultralight solo options such as the Monk Flat Tarp work well for suspended setups, while a 7x10 gives extra vestibule space for gear. Make sure the tarp has tie-out points and a low ridgeline option to keep rain off while maintaining airflow.

A low A-frame or a tight lean-to with a low ridgeline sheds wind and rain most effectively, especially when paired with weather-resistant fabrics like silpoly or 70D nylon. Hunchback pitches add headroom and stove-compatible pyramid tipis are useful in emergencies, while large rectangular tarps (10x12) are better for group storm shelters.
