Why We Like The Mountain Hardwear Kor Airshell Warm Vest

The day's forecast calls for strong winds and low temps, but that won't stop us from getting after it on the trail when we're zipped up in the Mountain Hardwear Kor Airshell Warm Vest. A lightweight Pertex Quantum Air construction does its part to help us slice through windy conditions while also deflecting rain drizzles, and the light insulation brings just enough to our core to help us layer like a champ. Not to mention, this vest uses recycled materials to help us explore the planet we love without leaving as big of a footprint.

Almost Perfect

I got this on sale, which helped me pull the trigger, and ultimately, keep the vest. There is so much right about this vest, with just 2 negatives which were almost deal-breakers for me. First, the positives: it is exactly the weight and fabric type that I was looking for, lightweight and breathable. It is also adds a nice warmth layer. I was surprised that this type of vest seems to be so hard to find from other manufacturers -- it is similar to the Patagonia Nano-Air vest and the Arcteryx Atom vest, but I could find nothing else like it, and those are both priced way higher than this one. Advantages of the MH version are that is has 4 pockets (2 chest + 2 hand). Excellent quality, as I have grown to expect from MH. How I use it: I use this as a trail running layer when the temps are under 40F - it can fit over a number of base layer or mid layer options so it is very versatile. I also use it for mountain biking. It has really good, lightweight warmth in the front and it sheds heat from the back very efficiently. And then when you stop, it stops shedding heat and keeps you warm. What I did not like: just 2 things, the height of the collar and the overall length of the vest. the collar, when fully zipped, jams up against my throat/bottom of my chin. The fabric isn't hard, or stiff, so it's not horribly uncomfortable, but it is somewhat annoying. I am hoping that over time it will "settle a bit" and not be so noticeable. The vest isn't as long as I would like - it extends just to my waist, and not as far down as any of my mid layers, or base layers. And there is no cinch cord at the waste to tighten it up. I have considered taking it into a person to add some length to it, perhaps with an elastic waist band, or something. I am getting used to it, but I find myself pulling down on it from time to time because I just want it to be a little longer (2 inches would do it). About me/fit: I am about 6'1" tall and weigh about 200 lbs, and I bought the Large. The vest has a little looseness to it, definitely not fitted, but I think this adds to its versatility. You can comfortably layer it over a mid layer (mid-weight fleece, sweatshirt), or you can just wear it over a t-shirt on a warmer day.

Didn’t Fit…boxy

Splurged on this and really wanted to live it. My wife has the jacket, and it’s been a great piece of kit for her The vest bore a resemblance to the jacket, but offered comparatively minimal insulation. Nice materials and quality, and handled well. Size L. Fit and athletic endurance athlete. 6’0, 170, 43” chest, 32” waist. Fit was no good for me, so I returned it. It was a boxy mess. Chest was good, but the rest was a circus tent.Wasn’t inclined to try the M.

Looks good but about a half size too small. Very light but warm.

Go a size up. Runs a tad small but I still like it as a layer.

Great lightweight vest for all occasions. Warm enough for moderately cold days.

This is my new go to all around favorite lightweight vest!!

It's comfortable, breathable, versatile and not to mention down right stylish!! Most days I combine it with my MHW Polartec Power Grid jacket and I am completely warm all the way down to the low 30s. It's super breathable when doing anything physical, which has been amazing!! The only knock I have is that I wish the sizing was a little better. Everything MHW that I own is XL, but for this vest I had to size up to the XXL just for it to fit properly, so size up! Also I wish it was another inch or two longer for us tall guys, but other than that, this vest is perfect. I have the Kor Airshell Warm Jacket too and absolutely love it. Just get it, you won't be disappointed!!
