Winter doesn't mean you have to be cold.

Dog-sled across Sweden, maneuver the snowblower in Minnesota, or brave the streets of downtown Chicago in mid-January in the Fjallroven Women's Nuuk Insulated Parka. You'll be toasty warm while the rest of the world suffers in a deep freeze. When the snow shifts from a pretty dusting to a burly blizzard, the Nuuk's waterproof and windproof shell keep the snow and wind at bay until you find shelter from the storm.

The shell of the Nuuk is made from Hydratic, a windproof, waterproof, and breathable fabric. The fabric consists of microscopic pores, thousands of times smaller than a single water droplet, but larger than steam vapor. External water is unable to penetrate the fabric strictly due to size, while steam you generate when working hard may escape, thus creating the comfortable duality of breathable and waterproof. The  Fjallroven's own Supreme Micro Loft provides insulation. Similar to down in form and function, Supreme Micro Loft consists an intricate network of varying widths of synthetic fibers, creating a barrier made of air pockets. Cold air can't cross the air-bubble border, and warm air has difficulty getting across as well. In short, warm air stays inside the jacket and cold air stays out.

A thigh-length hem offers a bit more protection for brutal winter winds, and the fleece-lined collar and hood keep you snug as a, um bug in a rug. When the winds quiet down and the peeks out, remove the faux fur trim from your hood and enjoying emerging from your Nuuk cocoon.  Two fleece—lined hand pockets offer extra warmth for your frozen digits, and hook-and-loop cuff closures make it easy to keep uninvited environmental guests from sneaking in.

    Vegan coat

I get it...faux fur because it is a vegan coat. The fit of this coat was the most boxy of the other coats I tried (Sorel and Norrona). It says it is waterproof but I don't think this coat would hold a candle to the Gore-Tex featured in the Norrona coat. Nice, true red color but it doesn't have down insulation, again because it is vegan, and it didn't feel as warm to me as the down insulation in other coats.

      Perfect winter coat

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

I can wear this coat in the winter for a long dog walk (1+ hours) in 20-degree weather and be perfectly comfortable with a single shirt on underneath. The waist can be cinched in (on the inside) and there are plenty of pockets for phone, dog bags, treats, etc. It is heavy! I probably wouldn't wear it on a hike.

      Warm stylish parka

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: XXS

Runs large. Usually, I wear S or XS, but this time ordered XXS and it fits well. Parka is really high quality and worth its price: made from amazing materials, everything is in its place, a lot of useful pockets, warm and windproof. Highly recommend.

      Great coat!

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large

True to size for me and very very warm for Chicago winters! Hand warmer pockets are perfect and has many more bells whistles and pockets than the more expensive Canada Goose coats. I was trying to choose after giving this a shot before shelling ou $800 for competitor and so glad I did. Far superior!!!

      SO HAPPY!!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large

First of all, I cant believe how helpful and knowledgeable and accommodating the Back Country staff is ..I am a customer for life. I searched high and low, and among many brands, for a truly WARM, non down, winter coat that could stand up to the elements, and finally found the NUUK. I am so very happy. It runs VERY large; Im 5'8' and 130 lbs and ended up with an extra small, (im normally a medium in Northface) which fits perfectly, even in the arms (mine are very long)

This is a very well constructed coat, it is very warm, and its also fluorocarbon free ..a bonus to give my money to a company with a commitment to the environment!

Very happy. Thanks to Fjullraven for making a quality animal free product, and to Back Country all of your help! I have recommended to several friends who have the same requirements.

The synthetic insulation isn?t sufficiently warm to go without a mid-layer in extreme cold. I?m wearing a featherweight 650 fill down jacket underneath when the temps drop into the 20?s. I feel the cold in my arms more than my body as there?s less insulation in the sleeves. I tried to learn how the insulation in this parka compares with Primoloft but the manufacturer doesn?t have these specs.

The parka is cozy and snug in the neck and the ?fur? trim around the neck looks attractive. It?s not what others are wearing and the outer fabric has a high quality feel. The hood is functional but has to be folded back to see. This parka appeals to me but it?s far from urban chic.

The sleeves are on the long side but the velcro wrist straps can be wrapped to raise them up and they keep the cold out. The bottom pockets are low and don't have a side opening. There are higher pockets close to chest level but it?s awkward to walk with arms out 90 degrees. They do come in handy when driving.

Oddly a snap is missing in the middle so the flap doesn?t lie flat in that spot.

I usually but not always wear a medium and bought this parka in medium. I?d prefer an extra inch in the back when I cross my arms. It?s really hard to say with precision any parka is ?true to size? or not, since sizing varies from brand to brand. This parka is not sleek or fitted but that?s not a matter of size. Were I to vary from my usual size, I?d size up for greater ease of movement and room for layering. This is not the right coat for the woman who wants to show her contours.

The parka is overpriced for its warmth. It?s marketed in the U.S. as suitable in extreme cold. In Europe, it marketed for changing weather conditions. The down-filled version of it (Kyla) sells for $700 and has only 500 fill power. Plus, the manufacturer offers only a one-year warranty.

I recommend the Nuuk parka if you?re looking for medium warmth and like the look and fit enough to pay. $250 - $300 would be a reasonable price.

      Runs Big!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs large

The construction, style, and warmth of this jacket is spot-on, but being 5'1" and 120 pounds, the XS was still WAY too big. I looked like I was wearing a men's jacket; the shoulders, arm length, and boxiness of the bottom part definitely was not flattering on my small frame. It did look great from the side as it is slightly cinched in and does have a nice silhouette, but I felt overwhelmed in it otherwise. A friend of mine tried it on and she is 5'5 and 140 pounds and it fit her much better (the XS). Again, it is a really well made jacket and I did wear it in sub zero temps in North Dakota and was very warm, but if you are on the petite side, I just wouldn't recommend it.

what is the thermal experience index for this parka ?

TEI is actually a proprietary system developed by Canada Goose, so it doesn't directly apply to Fjallraven. If I had to guess, based on Canada Goose's system, I'd say a four or five. This is a serious jacket for being outdoors in very cold, nasty conditions. It's serious overkill for the average cold-weather consumer to wear every day.

Is this parka machine washable? Thank...

Is this parka machine washable? Thank you.

Yes this is machine washable. I highly suggest using a non-soap deteregent specially formulated to clean fabrics like this that feature a waterproof /breathable membrane. Check out the link below.

Don't use a top loading washer since the twisting action may damage the jacket. You should also consider air drying the jacket or using a very low setting - there will be more specific instructions about drying on the actual care label for this jacket.
