Green Yoga & Meditation Essentials

Consider the type of practice and how much cushion your joints need: 1.5mm (1/16") thin mats suit Ashtanga or Vinyasa flows, 3mm (1/8") is a versatile everyday option, and 6mm or 12mm+ thick mats work for restorative or joint-sensitive use. Models like the ProsourceFit 6mm mat are a good example when extra padding for knees or meditation is a priority.

For upright sitting and shorter meditations, a zafu—often filled with buckwheat or kapok—elevates the hips and reduces knee strain, while bolsters with firm foam or fiber cores are better for restorative poses and longer, reclined practices. Traditional zafu cushions with kapok fill provide breathability and a firmer lift, and buckwheat options from brands like YogaByCandace let you adjust firmness by adding or removing hulls.

Natural rubber typically offers the best grip and sweat resistance compared with PVC, while TPE is a lighter, more travel-friendly alternative with decent traction. If you practice hot or fast flows, prioritize a natural rubber surface for non-slip performance and look for tear-resistant edges to hold up to daily use.

Most standard mats measure 68-72 inches in length, so taller practitioners often opt for longer or wider options—mats up to 24 inches wide give added stability for broader stances. Keep in mind that thicker mats add weight and change the non-slip geometry, so balance extra width with a thickness that still allows confident footing during flows.

Straps and blocks extend reach and support proper alignment so you can safely deepen stretches; straps typically use reinforced nylon or cotton webbing for tensile strength while blocks provide stable contact points for hands and feet. Since sizing is universal, pick a strap length and block thickness that match your arm span and hand grip to maintain correct alignment through poses.
