Triathlon / TT Bike Brakes

Rim brakes are a solid choice for straightforward triathlon courses with moderate descents and steady speeds, where traditional calipers deliver adequate stopping. Disc brakes are better when you need higher stopping power or more control in emergency or technical situations, and hydraulic disc systems offer superior braking force and modulation; models like the Shimano 105 BR-R7000 illustrate reliable rim-caliper performance if you stick with rim brakes.

Check your frame and fork for brake bosses to confirm rim-brake compatibility, since caliper-style brakes mount there. If you see disc brake mounts—typically flat-mount or post-mount—or thru-axles, the bike is set up for disc rotors and hub-mounted disc systems.

Use pad compounds made for carbon rims when running carbon wheels to avoid scoring, because carbon-specific pads are formulated to be gentler on those surfaces. Aluminum wheels pair best with traditional aluminum-compatible pads, and switching to the correct pad type helps preserve rim condition and braking feel.

Pad life depends on mileage, road grit, and rim condition, since rim brake pads degrade through normal use. Inspect pads often during training and plan to replace them sooner in wet or gritty conditions, as wear accelerates when rims are contaminated or rough.

Hydraulic rim brakes offer a middle ground by delivering better modulation and more consistent performance than mechanical calipers while keeping the aerodynamic and weight advantages of rim brakes. High-performance hydraulic time-trial options like the TRP TEKTRO TT Hydro HD-T912 and HD-T910 show how that compromise can look, though hydraulic disc systems still provide the strongest stopping power.
