Check that your shoes and pedals use the triangular 3-hole pattern used by road systems, since 3-bolt cleats secure to the sole with hex bolts. Shimano SPD-SL and Look KEO both use this layout, so matching the hole pattern between shoe, cleat, and pedal ensures compatibility.

If you want more rotational freedom to protect your knees, choose a higher-float option like Shimano SPD-SL yellow, which offers about 6° of float (3° each direction). For less movement try the blue 2° option or the red fixed cleat when you prefer a more locked-in feel.

3-bolt road cleats excel on smooth tarmac and offer excellent power transfer, but their exposed design makes walking and muddy conditions difficult. Riders who spend time off-road or encounter wet, debris-filled trails generally do better with recessed 2-bolt SPD cleats that shed mud and are easier to walk in.

Plastic SPD-SL cleats provide a stiff connection and good pedaling efficiency but tend to wear faster and need periodic replacement, while metal cleats and brass pedal components resist abrasion better. If you frequently walk or ride in rough conditions, metal recessed 2-bolt designs usually last longer.

Look KEO multi-release cleats allow exits in multiple directions—lateral, heel-out, or upward—which can make unclipping more forgiving in unexpected situations. They also sit on a wide KEO platform that helps distribute pressure and reduce hot spots on longer rides.
