Green Lighting

For trail navigation, favor a spot-focused beam and switch to a flood beam for tent chores; models like the Petzl Tikka offer both beam types. Flood beams make close-up tasks like cooking or map reading easier, while a spot beam helps you see farther down trail, and about 100 lumens is usually enough for personal tasks.

Rechargeable lithium-ion cells offer the convenience of USB recharge in models like the Petzl Tikka Core, but they can lose output and runtime in sub-freezing temperatures. Carrying AAA alkaline spares or keeping batteries warm in a jacket pocket helps maintain performance on cold trips.

If you're backpacking, favor compact electric lanterns like the Black Diamond Moji R+ which delivers 200 lumens in a 2.9-ounce package. For car camping or basecamp where weight is less critical, larger electric or gas-powered lanterns such as mtnGLO provide higher output for group lighting.

Most campers find 100 lumens sufficient for personal tasks, around 200 lumens works well for small groups (often lasting 5+ hours at higher settings), and 600 lumens lights like the Goal Zero Lighthouse 600 can illuminate an entire campsite. Think about runtime on low settings and modes such as red night-vision to extend usable battery life.

Prioritize lights with impact-resistant bodies, weather-resistant seals, and durable plastics or aluminum housings to survive drops and rough use. Features like rubberized grips, IPX4 water resistance, and hooks or clips for hanging make lanterns and lightbars more versatile around camp.
