Gray Gravel & Cyclocross Brake Small Parts

Organic pads perform best in dry, dusty hardpack gravel and tend to run quieter with gentler rotor wear, while metallic (sintered) pads excel in muddy, wet cyclocross conditions and last longer under abrasive use. Consider swapping to metallic sintered pads for winter or mud-heavy races and using organic pads for quieter, dry gravel riding.

For steep, technical descents choose a larger rotor toward the upper end of the 140–203mm range for stronger stopping power and improved heat dissipation. Rotors with floating designs or cooling fins also help reduce warping and manage thermal load during sustained braking.

Hydraulic systems offer superior stopping power and heat management, and modern cross bikes commonly come with hydraulic disc brakes. Brands like Shimano, SRAM, and TRP make hydraulic systems with consistent modulation, but they require the correct mineral oil or DOT fluid and periodic bleeding, whereas mechanical brakes are simpler but less powerful in variable, muddy conditions.

A six-bolt rotor has six evenly spaced bolt holes around the hub, while Shimano’s Centerlock uses a spline interface and a locknut to secure the rotor. Check your hub specification because mounting type determines which rotors fit, and you’ll need an adapter to run six-bolt rotors on a Centerlock hub.

Yes, internal routing protects stainless-steel cables and hydraulic hoses from mud and debris, which improves durability and reduces how often housings and cables get contaminated. Be aware that internal routing can make routine maintenance and cable or hose replacement a bit more involved than external setups.
