Orange Ascenders & Descenders

For long aid climbs and hauling, chest and foot ascenders combined with a handled ascender give the most efficient rope progression and reduced hand fatigue. Examples like the Croll chest ascender and Pantin foot ascender pair well with handled models such as the Edelrid Hand Cruiser, which typically weigh 200g+ and have ergonomic grips for all-day comfort.

Match the device’s rope compatibility to your rope—many basic ascenders work on 8–11mm ropes while expedition and dual-purpose units handle up to 13mm. Also check cam geometry for smooth clipping and look for CE/UIAA certification and strength ratings exceeding 15 kN to ensure safe performance on fixed lines.

Ultralight tools such as the Tibloc (around 50g) or the Petzl Basic (about 62g) are great as emergency backups or for lightweight jugging, but they’re not intended as your primary hauling device. Use them when weight and pack space are critical, and switch to handled or reinforced units for long, repetitive ascents.

Prioritize ascenders with stainless steel cams for corrosion resistance and aluminum alloy frames to keep weight down while staying durable. Robust frames with toothed or smooth cams stand up to repeated rope abrasion, and handled models often add rubber or plastic grips to reduce hand fatigue when conditions are wet.

Dual A&D units like the Grivel A&D are designed for mountaineering on fixed ropes and limited descents, featuring an integrated rappel plate for quick transitions. They typically accept thicker ropes (up to about 13mm) and offer versatile cam systems suited for snow slopes and expedition use.
