New MLC is much upgraded, almost perfect
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I had the old (shiny) MLC 45 and quite liked it, took it on some month-long trips as my only bag and was convinced i’d have it forever. However since the new model was released I was intrigued at the changes and figured i’d get it for my next trip. I’m at the airport heading home and the short version is this: the new version is better than the old in every way. it has a lot of strengths, only a few issues/drawbacks, and I’d score it a 9/10 PROS: - new recycled tpu coating (the matte finish) is a substantial improvement. it feels textured and nice and looks great, in sunlight there’s almost a sparkle coming off the pattern. it also does a better job of resisting water and scuffs. whereas the shiny surface like to accumulate white marks and proof of impacts, new one seems to wipe clean everything I’ve thrown at it - organization makes a lot more sense now. before there were two pockets on the outside and a padded tech pouch on BOTH sides, now there’s a padded pouch and organization on the back and no openings on the front. this increases security substantially and makes packing simpler, but the biggest impact was i felt more comfortable throwing my bag down and knowing which side to keep upright. - compression straps are an impactful addition and the new daisy chain location and straps for long gear are both more practical and better looking than before -the bag looks MUCH better in person than before. it’s professional enough to bring into p much any office space, lowkey enough so that it just looks like a backpack (or duffel/briefcase if u carry it that way), and doesn’t attract unwanted attention UNCHANGED AND AWESOME -this thing holds a ton of stuff, it did before and does so now. i overpacked on this trip and can still tighten the compression straps - being able to stow the backpack straps and carry it as a briefcase or duffel or shoulder bag is great versatility. i know some others do this (like aer tp3) but patagonia’s clamshell design and admin pocket make a world of difference in practicality NOT STOKED ON - i would love a small access pocket on the top like the mini-MLC has. would be perfect for stowing pocket things and keeping them nearby when it’s a backpack. aight planes leaving happy travels y’all
