- Q & A
Easy to transport and store, but set up was confusing for the first few times.
Storage issue? Oru is the solution!
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
So I will be honest I was really skeptical about this boat at the start before I tried it. I come from a kayak tour guide background of 8 years and I have owned and paddled a large variety of boats. How can a plastic foldable kayak really compare to a "real" kayak? I was happily surprised about this boat and loved how it handled!
This boat is light and easy to carry around by one person. Maneuvered way better then any "sit-on-top" I have ever paddled. Because of the design, I didn't feel like a sail out on the water with wind. This boat cuts through the water instead of plowing and it tracks well through small waves and light wind (~10 knots/11mph). You can even put this boat on "edge" to turn the boat. With the large cockpit opening it was great to take our small dogs with us while we paddle (one fit behind the seat). Because it only weighs 26 lbs there isn't a lot of effort to get the boat moving so you really save a lot of energy out on the water compared to heavier boats. Huge selling point - YOU CAN STORE IT ANYWHERE!!! We went car camping for the weekend and could fit two boats with all our gear without a roof rack - money saved!
First time set up can be tricky to know how everything folds and clips together. Look at a video before trying. Same goes for folding it back together, there is a specific way it folds up. ***There are little color coded arrows and targets*** make sure you match the colors together otherwise it puts un-needed strain on the plastic. I wish they had a strap option to wear it like a backpack instead of an over the shoulder strap.
Bottom line: If you are tight on storage, Oru is the way to go! This boat packs down and is super simple to store. Great boat to play around on and go out for an easy paddle, and it tracks well in the water. If you are looking for an all day adventure kayak look at Oru's Bay or Coast kayaks because of the ability to put a spray skirt on.
so easy to transport!
Check out how easy this thing is to transport! Perfect for those who don't have a lot of space or car racks.
Great for the casual kayaker

I loved being out on the water in this Oru. It exceeded my expectations as far as the quality and ease of putting it together. The first time we tried to assemble it and take it apart was kind of a pain. Once we figured out how it folds down, though, it was a breeze. It has pretty good traction and holds a line well in the water. However, I wouldn't recommend using it in choppy conditions. A large dog fits well in this kayak. The Oru puts non foldable and inflatable kayaks to shame. It doesn't collapse down to a tiny size by any means, and I wouldn't want to hike far with it strapped to my back for very long, but it beats having a bulky 10 foot kayak that needs to be strapped down/locked down to prevent theft. This is a great solution for people who live in small places or drive small cars.
