When you're cruising powder runs just outside the resort gates, it can be tempting to leave your backcountry pack in the car and ride without restriction, but that's just asking for trouble. The Dakine Poacher RAS Vest offers a low-profile solution that keeps all your avy gear close at hand without weighing you down or throwing you off-balance while you ski.
A slim main compartment offers just enough room to store your shovel and probe, while six front pockets conveniently secure your beacon, snacks, maps, and more. There's even an internal climbing skins pocket that helps skin glue stay warm so they don't lose their stick. This pack is also compatible with Mammut's Removable Airbag 3.0 System, or RAS (sold separately), when you want to take extra precautions. And if you plan on going big in the backcountry, this vest is compatible with Dakine's Impact Spine Protector (also sold separately), because you can't take safety too seriously.

The Vest Backpack
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
This is a better way to manage all of your gear than the traditional backpack. All of the gear that you need readily accessible is stowed in the vest pockets while your other gear is stowed in the backpack. My Dakine contact suggests that this bag holds no bigger than a small-medium volume snow shovel. This bag does have a hydration ready route, and your hydration bag will slide into the same compartment that the spine protector rides in. But, once you put a shovel in it you need to make sure that your bladder is protected from any sharp metal shovel edges.
This also makes a great nordic ski pack without the shovel, probes, and spine protector.
