For flat, fast triathlon courses you’ll see the biggest aero gains with deep-section rims in the 55–65mm range, like many 58mm carbon race wheels that balance drag savings and weight. If your course has punchy climbs or gusty crosswinds, a shallower 45mm rim is often more versatile and easier to handle.

Check your bike’s axle spacing and brake type before buying: many disc race wheels use 12x100mm front and 12x142mm rear standards and expect a disc brake fork and caliper clearance. Also confirm hub compatibility with your cassette body—most wheelsets support Shimano or SRAM freehubs.

Tubeless-ready rims can lower rolling resistance on smooth pavement and are common on carbon race wheels, while hookless designs trim weight but require tires rated for hookless rims. Match a 23mm internal rim width to 25–28mm tires for optimal tire profile and performance.

Carbon can be durable if the wheel uses impact-resistant layups and higher spoke counts—many training-focused sets use 24 spokes and alloy hubs for longevity. Expect race-oriented carbon sets to trade some durability for lower weight, so choose a sturdier build if you plan heavy use.

Yaw-optimized shapes like sawtooth profiles on the ENVE 65 or HexFin dimples on the Zipp 454 NSW reduce steering torque and improve stability at typical yaw angles encountered in races. Shallower 45mm rims also perform better in gusty conditions if you’re sensitive to crosswind handling.
