Trekking pole pairs are ideal for backpacking, steep terrain, or heavy loads because using two poles helps distribute weight and reduces knee impact. Single hiking staffs work well for casual day hikes on flatter ground and some even include a built-in camera mount to double as a monopod.
Carbon fiber poles are lighter and can get down toward the ~450 gram range, offering top performance but they’re more vulnerable to twisting and torsional breakage. Aluminum, especially 7075 alloy, is heavier but much more durable and bend-resistant for rough use.
Aim for poles that extend to roughly 100–125 centimeters for full-length use and collapse to about 30–35 centimeters for easy packing. Adjustable, telescoping or folding designs let multiple users share a pole and make it simpler to attach to a backpack.
