Blue Stoves & Grills

For ultralight trips consider a single-burner canister stove like the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe, which weighs under 3 ounces and is tuned for high-altitude performance near 8,200 feet. Its compact footprint and efficient burner geometry mean fast boil times without taking much pack space.

If you're cooking for a group, prioritize multi-burners and wide cooking surfaces—models like the Camp Chef Pro 90X offer three burners to run multiple pots at once. Higher BTU outputs, such as 34,000 BTUs on large burners, help bring big pots to boil quickly for shared meals.

Fuel choice changes convenience and heat: isobutane canisters are lightweight and pair with fast-boiling backpacking stoves, while propane or wood and coal work better for grills and fire pits at camp. Choosing a multi-fuel or modular system gives flexibility when availability or cooking style changes on a trip.

Durability comes from heavier materials and thoughtful construction—enamel-coated cast iron on grills like the Snow Peak Takibi and stainless steel in fire pits such as the FireCan Deluxe handle open flames and heavy use. Also look for solid construction details like piezo igniters, independent burner dials, and folding frames that resist warping at high BTU outputs.

Think about packed dimensions and weight: ultralight canister stoves can be under 3 ounces and tuck into a cook pot, while self-contained systems like the Jetboil Flash boil in about 2 minutes and keep everything together. For multi-day treks, favor compact, reliable boil times over larger camp stoves designed for car setups.
