Gray Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Inflatable SUPs offer portability and puncture-resistant drop-stitch PVC construction that packs down for travel and suits calm lakes, yoga, and beginner sessions. Hard boards use epoxy fiberglass for rigidity and superior glide, making them a better pick for racing or choppy water performance.

For beginners, favor wider boards—30+ inches—to maximize stability and confidence on the water, with lengths around 9–11 feet for easier turning. Wide hardboards from brands like Starboard tend to provide high volume and predictable handling that help new paddlers progress.

A good rule is to choose a paddle about 6–8 inches taller than your height so the handle reaches your wrist when your arm is raised overhead. Consider materials too: carbon paddles can weigh around 14–20 oz for easier strokes, while aluminum shafts are heavier but more budget-friendly.

Most inflatable SUPs use drop-stitch construction with PVC or military-grade vinyl and have PSI ratings in the 12–25 PSI range for a firm ride. Brands like GILI Sports emphasize durable PVC and portability, and you’ll typically use a pump rated for 15–25 PSI to reach the board’s recommended stiffness.

Leash choice depends on conditions: ankle or calf leashes work well for flatwater, touring, and yoga, while rivers and whitewater call for a quick-release waist leash for speedy detachment. Boards like the Hala Atcha with extra-wide designs up to 34 inches add stability in turbulent water and still pair well with a quick-release setup.
