Yellow Road Wheels

Think about where you ride most: climbing wheels under ~30mm rim depth and often under 1.5kg per wheelset suit steep, punchy terrain, mid-section gravel/cyclocross rims (30–50mm) balance mixed road and light off-road use, and aero wheels over 50mm or disc designs excel on flat, fast rides. Models like the Zipp 404 Firecrest illustrate how a deeper 60mm rim favors sustained speed on flat courses.

Check your frame's dropout spacing and brake type before picking wheels; modern road wheels commonly use 12x100mm front and 12x142mm rear axle standards and require disc brake compatibility. Also confirm rim inner width of about 19–25mm and maximum tire clearance—many all-road sets accept up to 32mm tires, as seen on all-road models like the Scope R4.A.

Yes, tubeless-ready clincher wheels let you run lower pressures for better traction on mixed surfaces and reduce pinch-flat risk, which is handy for all-road use with up to 32mm tires. Many tubeless rims come in hooked or hookless constructions and are certified to specific tire pressures, so make sure the rim tire rating matches your intended psi.

Aluminum rims, especially forged or one-piece forged constructions, tend to resist cracks and take curb impacts better, while carbon fiber rims prioritize a superior stiffness-to-weight ratio and can be built under 1kg per pair for ultra-light climbing sets. Consider whether you value long-term durability or the weight savings and responsiveness carbon delivers for racing.

For time trials and triathlon you generally want deep rims over 50mm and a stiffer rear build with around 18–24 spokes to reduce drag and improve aero performance. Conversely, climbing wheels favor shallow rims under 30mm and lower overall weight to help acceleration on steep terrain.
