Match the winch capacity to your vehicle weight and intended terrain; many trucks use a 10,000-pound-rated winch like the Warn VR EVO 10-S for heavy mud or rocky recoveries. Also consider synthetic rope for lighter weight and reduced water absorption if you’ll be crossing rivers or wet trails.

Kinetic straps with elastic nylon weave are best for snatching a stuck vehicle out of sand or mud, especially in open areas using a 20–30 foot strap length. Tow or non-elastic straps are better for controlled pulls or towing where stretch would be unsafe.

Pick shackles whose working load limit exceeds your vehicle’s gross weight; common options range from 4.75-ton to 14.5-ton ratings for heavier rigs. Forged steel D-shackles or screw-pin shackles are safer choices since they resist breaking under shock loads.

Maxtrax MKII and similar recovery boards are designed to handle many tires up to about 35–40 inches, so a 35-inch tire will generally work fine. Check board width against tire footprint and look for reinforced composite construction if you expect extreme torque.

A solid overlanding kit combines a heavy-duty strap (for example, a 17,600-pound strap found in ARB Premium Recovery Kits), tree saver, D-shackles, and a compact shovel, plus traction boards and a Hi-Lift Jack X-Treme if you need big lift height. Add a small air compressor and a winch extension strap for flexibility across sand, mud, and rocky terrain.
